Many parks are still closed due to the coronavirus outbreak; however, reopening plans have been starting to emerge.
This list will be updated as new information is released by the National Park Service. I will try to keep things as current as I can, but if you know of any changes, please comment on the bottom of this post.
If the park is indicated as being OPEN, please understand that there are still likely some closures in place. If you plan on traveling to the parks, be sure to do your due diligence by researching the travel restrictions for the area you are from and the areas you will be traveling to.
Social distancing is expected in all instances.

Do you have any additional information on Voyageurs and Isle Royale National Parks? We are planning to visit in late August.
Ash Nudd
I don’t :(
Jenny Reid
We just visited Theodore Roosevelt National Park last week and loved it! Park rangers were on site in both units and in the south unit they even had a small gift shop area set up in the parking lot. Neither unit was busy, we felt like we had the whole park to ourselves and the wildlife was abundant!
Dirt In My Shoes
That’s awesome! Glad you had a great time!
Betsy Hill
What’s up with Death Valley? We are leaving this Friday and hitting 10 National Parks across Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and California. We have been so fortunate to get lodge and cabin reservations at all of the parks we are visiting. We have reservations there at the Ranch at the Oasis, but no word on the park. It has to be less crowded than the other Cali parks.
Dirt In My Shoes
Honestly, I don’t understand it. It’s the off-season there too, so it wouldn’t be crowded at all.
Susan
It would be helpful to know which Visitors Centers are open. We start each park visit at the Visitors Centers where we view the film, and get a good Park overview and Suggestions from the rangers. We prefer to wait for Visitors Centers To be open before visiting a park for the first time.
Dirt In My Shoes
Thanks for the suggestion!
Plamena Slavova
We visited Rocky Mountain National Park on June 29th, Craters of the Moon July 1st, Glacier National Park July 4th to 6th, Yellowstone July 7th, Devil’s Tower. Mn. Rushmore July 9th, Badlands July 10th. None of the visitors centers were opened, but if you go in the normal business hours they have rangers outside to give you information and maps.
Kelly Champion-Smith
Hoping Oregon opens back up before by July. Otherwise, revamp the whole vacay.
Dirt In My Shoes
Yep, I’ll be headed that way in July as well…crossing my fingers!
Harold
Thanks for this update.
Have a trip to the Washington national parks planned for September so will be checking your site and NPS as the date gets closer.
Hopefully by then things will have improved greatly.
Dirt In My Shoes
I hope so too!
Julie Anders
I’m trying to get permit to stay at Bright Angel campground in Oct but Grand Canyon site still shows it’s closed and not taking reservations. Am I missing something b/c your list says it’s open. I did notice they opened it for a few days over Memorial weekend then closed it again. Ugh – lots to keep up with.
PS- you’re one our favorite resources, thank you!
Dirt In My Shoes
It’s open but limited…it’s a phased reopening. Backcountry camping has not been opened up yet.
Christina Molina
Do you know how you can get park stamps for your passport if the visitors centers are closed and if you can buy the merchandise from the store online?
Dirt In My Shoes
Some parks have opened their online stores and are fulfilling orders. You can get a virtual stamp from many of the parks as well, but I doubt they are doing the stamps in person with the visitor centers closed.
Juventa Vezzani
Black Canyon of the Gunnison had the stamp book and ink pad sitting outside of the Visitor’s Center on a table.
Dirt In My Shoes
Very cool! Thanks for the info!
Plamena Slavova
In the parks i mentioned above you can get stamps outside of the visitor center if you stop by in the normal business hours. Badlands were closed at 4pm.
Amber
Have you heard anything about the national parks or forest areas in North Carolina, especially around Asheville and the Tennessee border? We have a trip scheduled there in June…
Dirt In My Shoes
Great Smoky Mountains is open!
Sarah
Isle Royal just posted that they are closed until further notice. There will be no boat service, lodging, camping in 2020.
Dirt In My Shoes
Thank you…wow, they changed their minds fast. Too bad — it doesn’t look like they will be opening this year at all.
Tammy B
Thanks for the great info. We are planning a trip to the 5 national parks in Utah Sept 7-23rd. If you have any info to help us out or that we need to know, please feel free to let me know. We do a national park trip every September. So excited for this years adventure.
Dirt In My Shoes
I have a lot of good info for the Utah parks. You can find it all here: https://www.dirtinmyshoes.com/national-parks
Dawn
Thank you! Great list, I’m so ready to be somewhere besides home. And your Arizona sunset/rise photos are gorgeous!
Dirt In My Shoes
Thanks!
Anna Porter
I’ve noticed on some of the parks that you marked as open do not have their visitor center open so I’m assuming the restrooms are not either? We wanted to take our grandkids to Voyageurs in August and it’s open but no visitor center currently and no cruise tours for the rest of this year. Very disappointing.
Dirt In My Shoes
I’m not aware of any parks that have open visitor centers right now, but some do have select restrooms open throughout the park. It’s an unconventional year to travel…that’s for sure.
Trina thomson
Thank you for the info. Do we know if any of Idaho’s parks are open.?Everything I’ve looked at says something along lines of check with county or something like that.
Dirt In My Shoes
I’m not sure…there aren’t any national parks in Idaho. Sorry I’m not more help!
Sabrina
While not technically parks, I guess, Idaho has several national monuments and national historic sites listed on the National Parks Service website.
1. Craters of the Moon
2. Hagerman Fossil Beds
3. Minidoka
4. Nez Perce
5. City of Rocks
and a few others.
Dirt In My Shoes
Yeah, these are not actual national parks. I’m not able to track all of the smaller units of the national park system…there are 419. For now, I’m sticking to the actual national parks. But thanks for the list!
Kelli Smith
I’m hoping to visit Sequoia and Kings NP this summer around July 12. Thanks for all the updates.
Dirt In My Shoes
Of course!
Anita
Thank you for the information. Good luck with the house hunting.
Dirt In My Shoes
Thanks :)
Tara Lounder
This is so helpful! Thanks Ash!
Dirt In My Shoes
No problem!
Cindy
Do have any idea when Shenandoah National Park will open?
Dirt In My Shoes
I don’t :(
Shana
Thank you so much for compiling this list!
Dirt In My Shoes
Of course!
David Pracht
Thank you Ash, the information you provide is always very much appreciated. It’s interesting that you note Glacier is closed, we’ve friends that took off from our area in northern California 2 days ago ultimately bound for Glacier thinking it’s open. I’ll have to update them, but they’re planning on being gone for a month so maybe by the time they get there things will have changed.
Thanks again.
Dirt In My Shoes
Yeah, Glacier hasn’t opened back up yet. Montana is still requiring visitors to self-quarantine for 14 days if they enter the state!
Layni
Thanks, Ash! As always, very useful. Best wishes for success on your home search!
Dirt In My Shoes
Thanks, Layni!
D
Yay! We are resuming our road trip late September if everything goes well..
Dirt In My Shoes
Very cool. Wishing you the best!
Karen Powell
Thanks so much for the update. We visited the petrified forest, Grand Canyon and saguaro National parks last year as well as Montezuma’s castle this past winter. So many amazing things to see
Dirt In My Shoes
It’s a cool state!
Emily Anderson
Thank this is so helpful
Dirt In My Shoes
You’re welcome!
Kristin
My hubby and I are planning to go Montana for 2 weeks leaving July 8th…
Hoping and crossing fingers things will be open.
Dirt In My Shoes
I hope so too…
Juanita Gutierrez
Greatly appreciated 😉
Dirt In My Shoes
No problem!
Merideth Hendry
Thank you!
Dirt In My Shoes

Jim White
Good to know, Thanks for the update….
Dirt In My Shoes

Amy Knoche
I think Great Sand Dunes is opening June 3
Dirt In My Shoes
Thanks! I got it in there. Things change so fast haha.
Stephen
