EYE OF THE WHALE ARCH
From the Tower Arch parking area, backtrack for 1.4 miles until you see a well-defined dirt road on your right. Turn here. (If you start going back up the challenging hill, you’ve gone too far.)
You’ll follow this road for 9 miles, so sit back and enjoy the views of the Arches backcountry!
Some sections of the route travel up and down hills through deep sand, which is why the park service recommends only driving this road from north to south. Have fun driving through a few obstacles along the way!
The final stop on this route is the Eye of the Whale Arch. This arch doesn’t look like much from afar, but after a short hike to its base, you’ll find a stunning oasis and lovely views. Definitely make the trek to get a closer look!
Return to your jeep after hiking to the Eye of the Whale and continue driving for another mile or so. You’ll soon reach an intersection. Going right takes you back down the Willow Flats Road (the dirt road you used to enter the park).
Going left travels past the picnic area and out to the paved main park road at Balanced Rock, where you can then go right to make your way back to Moab.
And now your adventure is complete — I hope you enjoy your time in the Arches backcountry! If you’re interested in another spectacular route to complete while you have your jeep, check out the White Rim Road in nearby Canyonlands National Park.
