The Popularity of Angels Landing in Zion National Park
Angels Landing is the most popular trail in Zion National Park and attracts millions of visitors each year. Despite its reputation as a challenging hike, even people who are not regular hikers are drawn to this iconic trail.
Permits and Safety Measures
Due to safety concerns and overcrowding, a permit system has been implemented for the last half-mile section of Angels Landing, known as the chain portion.
Visitors are required to obtain a permit to hike the entire trail, but the initial part of the trail offers stunning views and can be enjoyed without the permit.
Hiking Angels Landing: The Trail Experience
The trail is approximately five miles long, with an elevation gain of 1,500 feet. The initial section follows the river, offering great views of Angels Landing.
As the trail ascends, you are rewarded with breathtaking views of Zion Canyon’s majestic red rock formations. Even if you choose not to hike the chain portion, the trail still provides stunning views and a memorable experience.
Stopping Points and Alternatives
Many hikers choose to turn around at Scout Lookout, which offers impressive canyon views and is the last point before the chains. The famous switchback section called Walter’s Wiggles leads to Scout Lookout and provides a unique hiking experience.
Those with young children often stop at Refrigerator Canyon, where the temperature is cooler, and the views are still remarkable. We always like to start the trail with our young kids and see how far they can go!
The Chain Portion and Safety Considerations
The chain section is the final half-mile of the trail, with sheer drop-offs on either side. While it may appear intimidating, the chain portion is manageable with caution and patience.
Be sure to practice proper trail etiquette and allow others to pass safely, as it can become crowded and dangerous when hikers are in a hurry on this section of the trail.
Enjoying the Journey and Knowing Your Limits
Hiking Angels Landing is a thrilling adventure that offers rewarding views at every step. It is perfectly fine to stop at any point along the trail and enjoy the beauty without venturing onto the chains.
Assess your comfort level and turn back if you feel uncomfortable or unsafe, as safety should always be the top priority. Regardless of how far you hike, you’ll still be rewarded with phenomenal Zion views!
