Dry Tortugas National Park Overview
We’re buzzing with excitement over this episode about Dry Tortugas National Park. It’s this incredible, out-of-the-way spot about 70 miles from Key West, Florida. The whole pirate vibe initially drew us in, but there’s so much more to it.
When we first set foot on Garden Key, the main island, we were totally blown away by the size and history of Fort Jefferson. It’s not every day you find something so majestic in such a remote place. We’ve already got our hearts set on going back – thinking of taking a seaplane next time to soak in even more of the scenery and spend extra time exploring Key West.
Traveling to Key West
Traveling to Key West from Miami involves a scenic drive through the Florida Keys, a unique experience with ocean views on both sides while crossing bridges between small islands.
Despite the longer journey, this route is often more practical and cost-effective than flying directly into Key West. The drive through the Keys is picturesque and offers a chance to indulge in local flavors, like key lime pie at the Blonde Giraffe in Key Largo and seafood at Wahoo’s in Isla Morada.
Accommodation in Key West can be surprisingly expensive, with prices reflecting the area’s prime real estate and limited land. Its location as the jumping-off point for Dry Tortugas National Park adds to its appeal and demand. Despite the cost, staying in Key West is so convenient for catching the early morning ferry to Dry Tortugas.
A Turbulent Ferry Ride to Dry Tortugas National Park
Accessing Dry Tortugas National Park from Key West can only be done by boat or plane, with specific operators offering charter services for each. Most visitors opt for the ferry, a more budget-friendly option compared to the pricier seaplane. The ferry ride, lasting about two and a half hours, can be an adventure in itself, especially on choppy water days.
During our ferry ride, passengers experienced significant motion sickness, leading to a widespread and uncomfortable situation on the ferry. Listen to the full podcast episode for all the gory details of our ferry ride to Dry Tortugas!
Discovering the Wonders of Dry Tortugas National Park
Upon arriving at Garden Key via ferry, visitors find themselves at the heart of Dry Tortugas National Park, home to Fort Jefferson, the visitor center, and the campground.
Though not large, the island offers ample opportunity to explore its historic and natural attractions. Fort Jefferson, a massive 19th-century structure, dominates the landscape. Its size and architectural intricacy are far more impressive in person than in photos — touring the fort was absolutely the highlight of Dry Tortugas for our family!
The island’s natural beauty complements its historical significance. The moat surrounding Fort Jefferson, with its vibrant blue waters, provides a serene walk and opportunities for wildlife spotting. Plan on snorkeling while you’re here! Dry Tortugas is renowned for its stunning coral and marine life, part of the third-largest barrier reef system in the world.
The planning and cost of a trip to Dry Tortugas can be challenging, given its remote location and the need to book travel well in advance. But all the work is worth it when you finally step foot on Garden Key!
Key West: A Vibrant Extension of the Dry Tortugas Experience
Key West, the gateway to Dry Tortugas National Park, offers its own array of attractions that make it an essential part of the Dry Tortugas experience. Duval Street, the main road through downtown, is alive with live music and a festive atmosphere reminiscent of Margaritaville. Dining at iconic spots like Sloppy Joe’s, a favorite haunt of Ernest Hemingway, adds to the vibrant experience. The presence of wandering chickens contributes to the island’s charm, reflecting a laid-back lifestyle.
Besides the lively streets, Key West’s historical significance is highlighted through attractions like the Ingham Museum, a decommissioned Coast Guard cutter from 1936. The Ingham, used in World War II and the Vietnam War, offers a unique glimpse into naval life, and taking a tour is a fun way to embrace the seafaring lifestyle of the Keys.
Our first journey to Dry Tortugas was unforgettable, and we’re definitely planning a return trip. It’s not the easiest park to access, but that just adds to its allure. We’d love to hear from anyone who’s been to Dry Tortugas or is thinking of going.
If you have questions about your trip, we’re here to help out. Send us a message with your stories, questions, or comments.
