Hi there! Are you ready to plan your adventure of a lifetime in Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park?! From the craters and steam vents to the ocean, rainforests, and lava tubes, you are sure to find something that everyone in your group will LOVE.
Hawai’i Volcanoes is a place where memories are made and talked about for years to come. I’ll never forget the way I felt on my first visit—absolutely awe-struck that I was standing so close to an active volcano! I had the time of my life, and I know that you want the same for your vacation!
Chances are your time is limited, and you’re wondering how to fit everything in. You may have already looked at a map and been a little overwhelmed — and eager — to make sure that you don’t miss the best sights.
I’m a former park ranger, and I’ll help you plan your vacation down to the details. I’ve extensively explored Hawai’i Volcanoes and am here to help! Whether this is your first time to Hawai’i Volcanoes, or if you are returning after many years and would like to be reintroduced to the park, this list of 5 things is for you.
What You Need to Know About Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park
- Contrary to popular belief, seeing lava within the park during your visit is rare. If you’re lucky enough to visit while the lava is flowing, a long dayhike is often required to reach the viewing area. You can find out what’s happening with the volcano and the lava flow here.
- Hawai’i Volcanoes can be accessed year-round; however, points of interest are occasionally closed because of toxic fumes or volcanic smog. Click here for information on current closures within the park.
- Reserve a room at least six months in advance if you plan on staying at the park’s only in-park lodge, The Volcano House — rooms get snatched up fast! Otherwise, numerous options are available just outside of the park in nearby communities.
- If camping is your thing, Hawai’i Volcanoes has two front-country campgrounds, and some camper cabins are available. You can even rent your equipment when you get there! Be sure to learn about camping in the park before you go.
I’ll make sure that you don’t miss the sights that make this park so famous on your once-in-a-lifetime trip. Let the adventure begin!
